Controversial opinionAny change to how donations could be returned potentially sets a dangerous precedent.Donations, whether it be to politicians or charities or anywhere else, are largely understood to be permanent and irreversible. If donations could be pulled back by courts, then any donation receiver would need to consider that and place the funds into some kind of interim holding bucket for years until funds were considered “safe” to spend. Some of the funds in this case are about 3 years old. This would then result in cash stockpiles, rather than effective use of available funds.Something like this could cripple the financial forecast of an organization.Political parties should be spending funds as they come in, on campaigns, not building war chests. Charities should also be doing similar.
